Benjamin Alan Kubaczek is an Austrian-American composer, sound artist, and multi-instrumentalist working at the intersection of film music, acousmatic composition, and electroacoustic art. His work bridges narrative and spatial sound, with projects ranging from orchestral film scores to fixed media works. He is currently completing his Master’s degree in Computer Music and Sound Art at the IEM in Graz and studies acousmatic composition with Annette Vande Gorne in Vienna. Recent performances and nominations include international film festivals and electronic music stages such as NYCEMF, AudioArt Kraków, Forum Wallis, and Soundtrack_Cologne.
Born into a family of musicians, artists, and scientists, Benjamin was immersed in a diverse and creative environment from an early age. His musical journey began with classical piano, violin, and vocal training, later expanding into jazz, church music, and organ performance. As a soloist with the Vienna Boys Choir, he performed at Carnegie Hall and the Salzburg Festival under Riccardo Muti, collaborating with conductors including Seiji Ozawa and Philippe Jordan—experiences that deeply shaped his musical perspective.
Throughout his career, Benjamin has embraced a wide stylistic range. As a bass-baritone, he has performed Renaissance repertoire with early music pioneer René Clemencic and Gregorian chant with the Schola of the Vienna Hofburgkapelle. His vocal work has included performances with ensembles such as Neue Oper Wien under Walter Kobéra. In parallel, he explored more experimental and popular genres as singer, arranger, and keyboardist for both a progressive metal band and an award-winning boogie-woogie ensemble, touring across Europe and India.
His artistic practice today spans film music, electroacoustic composition, and sound design. In 2024, he was nominated for the WDR Filmscore Award at Soundtrack_Cologne21 for his orchestral rescore of Balcony Cacaphony by Quentin Haberham, for which he also created the full sound design. The same year, he collaborated with the Staatskapelle Sachsen-Anhalt for the rescore of Luna Park by Veit Helmer. His music for the Austrian comedy crime series Gamskrimi was presented in regional cinemas, and his compositions have been featured at festivals such as the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF), AudioArt Kraków, Forum Wallis, and in concerts across Europe.
His forthcoming release Impromptus Vol. 1 is a cycle of spatial studies and textural miniatures developed during a residency at the electroacoustic studio of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The work explores memory, layering, and sonic density in quadraphonic format and will be released in 2025.
Benjamin currently lives in Graz, Austria. Having spent formative years in Japan, Italy, and the USA, his musical language draws on a wealth of cultural influences. His compositions reflect a sensitivity to both structure and sensation—seeking connections between space, memory, and emotion in sound.
